Beginning in the fall of 2008, we are launching an experimental project to help rebuild the social infrastructure of a small local town named Zeigler.  Zeigler was a booming coal mining town in the early 20th Century.  As coal mines began to close so did the economy and civic pride of a large part of Zeigler.  Then came the methamphetamine problem which took a huge toll on small rural towns ravaging the population and property values.  Through the past several decades Zeigler's social infrastructure has eroded and there are now very few support systems and asset building outlets for its young people.

In the sumer of 2008 a mini-grant was made available for addressing communites impacted by meth.  Our coalition received this grant and are now in the development stages of engaging all of the stakeholders in addressing the needs of the young people in the community.  Southern Illinois Healthcare is lending one of their employees Michael Toso from the Peace Corps Fellows Community Development program from W.I.U.  to act as an Asset Liaison.  Michael is partnering with community leaders in city government, police, schools, public housing, churches, local library, civic groups and retirees to help develop an asset enrichment plan that will provide a broader safety net for its youngest citizens.  Please visit this page often for updates and milestones in this unique and vital prototype project.
