The first and most important thing to know about building assets is that they only grow through relationships.   There are no lessons, workbooks, or other shortcuts that will improve asset levels.   For assets to develop in a young person they need to be connected and up close to sincere, caring adults who will lead by example.

Think about when you were growing up.  Who challenged you to be a better person?  Who was a cheerleader for you?  Who was the eternal optimist who always believed in you?   Kids today need the same thing.  It's not just enough to have loving parents.  All kids need as many positive relationships with mature adults as they can get.

It starts with the basics.  First we need to make a conscious effort to make eye contact with kids. Even kids we don't know.  From there we simply learn their names and a few things about them (favorites sports team, their pet's name, favorite subjects in school, etc,).  You remember to bring those things up when you see them out and about.

As your relationship develops, you begin to challenge them with high expectations and encourage the development of more healthy values.  Once you have a relationship with a child it is amazing how much permission they will give you to set limits and boundaries for their safety and well-being.  Look for the best in them and help them see hidden talents and skills that they may not recognize.

To keep a relationship going, maintain regular contact with a young person.  Send cards, e-mails, and letters.  Remember birthdays.  Go to their recitals and ball games.  A few minutes a week and viola!  You are an asset builder investing in the future success of a young person!
